Since childhood, we're expected to have our studies wrapped up, chase our dream job upon reaching adulthood, and that's all cool. But what about life's challenges? The hurdles that pop up, who acknowledges those? Who explains that family dependency can mess with our procrastination habits?
Yeah, let's sort out our thoughts.
So, what's procrastination? "Putting off tasks, delaying what could be done now." Alright, but how to fix it? "Break tasks into smaller parts, set realistic goals, and make a schedule. Finding motivation and ditching distractions also keeps you on track."
The above paragraph seems easy to handle, to fix, mostly blaming the act of procrastination on the person or procrastinator (not that they're blameless) in this case, which makes no sense to me. Some folks start this habit from a young age, unconsciously.
Think about it, since we're little, we're taught to do one thing at a time because there's always tomorrow. A kid, for example, shouldn't worry about juggling two classes simultaneously because there's time, no need to rush. A college student shouldn't stress about finding a job because they can do it tomorrow after finishing the course. Workers are sold the idea of working hard now to live off retirement benefits later, and so on.
Innocently, we're often pushed to do things tomorrow or later, and depending on the character of this now-adult person, they might not even realize they're procrastinating, automatically lowering their quality of life. I strongly believe tackling procrastination should involve not just coaches but also healthcare professionals, be they psychologists or therapists, as it goes beyond what's visible.
I'm not saying embrace procrastination and wait for a saviour. Instead, understand that its roots might trace back to your childhood and should be discussed. It's not always about excessive laziness or lack of focus. I invite you to try understanding it from all angles and strive to be a better person for yourself and, above all, for your success. You can break free from procrastination!
