For any company or organisation, building and maintaining a strong brand in the marketplace is key to success, and to achieve that goal relies on the support of great design and brand appeal. In Zimbabwe, Amanda Simango, founder of Amy Designs, is bringing a wealth of creativity and a portfolio of design expertise to help any client get noticed.
LoA met the talented Amanda Simango last month in Harare to learn more about this small business with big aspirations.
What does your company do?
At Amy Designs, we offer a full range of graphic design services to meet the needs of any customer brief, supported by extensive experience and a depth of creativity.
“I wanted to start my own graphic design service and to work directly with clients to fulfill their creative needs in the brand marketing environment.”
What inspired you to start your company?
I wanted to start my own graphic design service and to work directly with clients to fulfill their creative needs in the brand marketing environment. I was also inspired to start my business in order to take control of my economic destiny and to earn money in order to take care of my daughter and my family.
Why should anyone use your service or product?
Because at Amy Designs, we offer great graphic design services at affordable prices. That means we can work with a range of companies, organizations and individuals, no matter how large or small the design brief.
Tell us a little about your team
At the moment, l am the only person in the Amy Designs team as l'm a freelance designer.
“I was inspired to start my business in order to take control of my economic destiny and to earn money in order to take care of my daughter and my family.”
“My goal is to build a sustainable client list of companies, organizations and individuals who will always be happy with my creative approach to any brief, and my finished high quality portfolio of work, and who will want to keep doing business with me.”
Share a little about your entrepreneurial journey. And, do you come from an entrepreneurial background?
Yes, but it was a small, grinding meal services business that my father used to offer during the hard 2008 period here in Zimbabwe. So l decided last year to start pursuing my own individual entrepreneurial journey and launching my graphic designing company, instead of working for a company which would pay me properly at the end of the month.
What are your future plans and aspirations for your company?
My goal is to build a sustainable client list of companies, organisations and individuals who will always be happy with my creative approach to any brief, and my finished high quality portfolio of work, and who will want to keep doing business with me.
What gives you the most satisfaction being an entrepreneur?
Earning my own money and setting my own working hours.
What's the biggest piece of advice you can give to other women looking to start-up?
Keep on pushing even when it gets too hard, and above all, never give up.

Why LoA loves it….
There can be no better reason for starting a business than wanting to take control of your own destiny and harnessing your own talents to build a better future for yourself and your family. For Amanda Simango, this was the inspiration behind her launching Amy Designs, and today she is building a business that is poised to grow through her design talent, her tenacity and her will to succeed. This is definitely a young business to watch over the coming months and years. --- Melanie Hawken, founder and ceo of Lionesses of Africa
