MASH T DESIGN STUDIO X KARINGANA WA KARINGANA TEXTILES
UPCYCLED & RECYCLED LIGHT PENDANT
A shared love of cutting edge design and contemporary African textiles led to a recent collaboration between multi-award winning South African design entrepreneur, Thabisa Mjo, founder of Mash T Design Studio, and creative Mozambican textile designer, Wacy Zacarias, founder of Karingana wa Karingana Textiles.
This collaborative spirit led to Thabisa designing an exciting new lighting pendant which is winning over new fans and existing customers alike. The pendant uses unique fabric made out of banana leaf and leftover African print fabrics from the incredible Karingana wa Karingana Textiles. This innovative new lighting createion is eco-friendly, being both upcycled and recycled. It can also be custom dyed for customers to the colour of their choice before weaving.
Speaking about her inspiration for this new lighting pendant, Thabisa says:
“I am also quite excited about this pendant, hopefully it's the first of many. I met Wacy through Nando's, she also does work for them. She told me about this fabric and the women who weave it, it's twin sisters based in Mozambique, and I knew immediately I had to use it somewhere. I love the colour and texture of the fabric and to me, it just goes to show the importance of collaboration. When we don't view each other as competition, but rather as potential partners, I think we have the ability to create beautiful compelling work that benefits us all.”
Thabisa has a reputation for creating beautiful, innovative and award-winning designs, particularly in the lighting space. This year her renowned Tutu 2.0 light was judged the 'Most Beautiful Object in South Africa' by public vote at Design Indaba 2018. “This functional lamp is a reimagining of the ballerina tutu, says Thabisa, who drew inspiration from both Western and African fashion styles to make this unique chandelier.” Thabisa’s other award recognitions include: MBOISA 2018, M&G Top 200, Future Found award 2017, Nando's HYD, Best Product 2016.
