DAISY Handmade Soap, the inspirational social entrepreneurship project in Mozambique that aims to empower people with skills to produce low cost hand-made soap by reusing ingredients and materials, to create jobs and protect the environment, is launching an exciting new product to add its popular range. The company’s new soap dish gift product is aligned with the company’s environmental awareness purpose. It is made of recycled coconut shell, handmade by Isaura, that accompanies the highly popular soaps made of coconut oil or recycled sunflower oil with citronella and lemongrass aroma. Each gift product is wrapped in cellophane bags (a plant based product which is also environmental friendly).
Cristina Margarida Rocha, a Mozambican social entrepreneur empowering women through handmade soap manufacturing
Many people in life see social challenges around them but do not act. However, for social entrepreneur Cristina Margarida Rocha, this was not an option, and she took her love of handmade soap and used it to build a high impact social business to empower other women.
The new soap dish gift products were publicly presented on Saturday 11 May at the popular artisan fair AISM Mayfair in Maputo. Mayfair is an annual event put together with the volunteering help of all American International School of Mozambique staff and community. Although it started out as a small PTA affair within the school community, it has grown over the years and today is one of the most sought out family events in Maputo city. It has become a place where families can enjoy live entertainment and buy arts and crafts goods from various local and international vendors, including those showcased by DAISY Handmade Soap. It is also a great opportunity for small artisan companies and individual craftspeople from the area to expose goods and services, and reach a wider audience.
Cristina Rocha, founder of Daisy Social Consulting, says of her company and its mission:
“The growing consciousness of the world’s population about natural, less polluting and sustainable alternatives to the indispensable, every-day products like soap, has been a catalyst to the growth of the handmade soap business. A market for products that not only nurture us but our home, the earth, has been stretching throughout the globe. DAISY Handmade Soap is a social project that is environmentally conscious and economically friendly, appealing to citizens across the different income brackets.”
She adds:
“Vegetable oils are the main ingredient in the production of handmade soap. These oils are rich in fatty acids, giving the skin nourishment and hydration. Glycerin, an end product of the process, softens the skin, making the addition of any preservatives or synthetic detergents to the soap unnecessary. In our project, we recycle used vegetable oil, after it has been tested for quality control, allowing the final product to have a more affordable and sustainable price.”
