Awards and Accolades
The New Generation Digital Awards took place in South Africa in September 2021, a ceremony to recognize and honour independent social and digital media campaigns and initiatives in the country. MC for this year’s awards was the renowned South African Actress, Singer and Songwriter; Relebogile Mabotja, who announced this year’s Silver award for Best Use of a Podcast/Vlog to Promote a Brand or Event going to the Blind History Podcast, produced by CliffCentral.com and Taylor Blinds and Shutters, with sign language interpretation by Thuli Zikalala and Yellow Owl.
The Blind History podcast is a crash course in getting to know history’s greatest men and women – and by great that doesn’t always mean good. In this series, hosted by Gareth Cliff and Anthony Mederer, and sign language interpreted by Thuli Zikalala of Yellow Owl, the team shares the details the history books sometimes leave out – the less well-known details, some of the stuff they didn’t teach you at school. Each person helps to put a piece of the puzzle in place, and bring history to life.
Thuli Zikalala is a well-known face in the Lionesses of Africa community, recognised for her sign language interpretation at the Lioness Lean In events in South Africa, helping deaf women entrepreneurs to fully participate in the event experience. This latest award recognizes her talent and the valuable work her company, Yellow Owl, does to empower greater access to good content for those who are deaf and hard of hearing.
Speaking about the latest award recognition, Thuli says, “Winning this award is a huge milestone for Yellow Owl in making digital content more inclusive for the Deaf community. It challenges brands and content creators to remove stereotypes by considering how they share their message. Through creative collaboration, more communities can be impacted positively. Well done to all the winners.”
