We’re all familiar with the Big 5 in nature. Majestic, strong, fierce, but yet so vulnerable because man has figured out a way to make money from each species that makes up the Big 5. Which makes it so sad is because in their world they reign, kings of the animal world, matriarchs of big clans, and tenacious mothers - seemingly unstoppable. Such is life.
Here is a short overview of a series that I have written.
In business we also have the Big 5. Not all are pretty or amazing or rock solid, they are quite the opposite. Yet just as the Big 5, they have a definite job in the circle of life, so your business Big 5 are a real portion of your business’s life. So who or what are the Big 5 in your business life or even your own life, and do they have a direct impact on your business?
Feeding time
The basic rule is right of way. During feeding time you wait for your turn. If you just nudge towards a piece you will get a slap of note from the powers that be. There will be enough for all. Then again if it is a dry season every morsel of food counts and then the leaders of the pack need to ensure that everyone survives.
Can you remember COVID? How many business owners had to decide who eats? Have you ever had to decide if there is enough to pull your business through? How about you can survive when only you “eat” from the pot but you have to let go of other mouths? Maybe you are still way back in the line and you see how many of your fellow business owners eat… you are patiently waiting in the side slips?
Clearer than this I do not have to tell the story. My question to you is this…
What or who is eating from your business and is it because you have enough or because it is vital for survival? Unfortunately many are fat from eating to show wealth but the food bowls are empty. The “slap” from the business world will be very hard. Many don’t recuperate after that slap.
Financial fitness
If you are a cheetah mom you cannot be a couch potato. You have to read the field then decide on the best tactic to reach the target. You have to strategize on how quickly you can pull it off, otherwise the pups die of hunger.
In your business you have to be financially fit too. You must be able to read the field. This might be your own budget, your businesses financial statements, the market, your clients and many more. You have to strategize on your survival otherwise your business doesn’t eat. Most of all you need a focus-driven urge to get the target over and over. If you are not fit you will not catch the buck.
Failures and vultures
Once the carnivores have eaten there are mostly scraps left. This is Christmas for the vultures. Most of the time they swoop in for a morsel way before the predators leave. Many vultures have been in a scrap with a predator but they stick it out. They know they will surely get something to eat.
If your business fails the vultures come in so soon that many times, unfortunately, you sell off way before it was the right time or the right price. It’s ok to fail - we all have and we all will. The point is to stay the predator for as long as you can and be ok with the fact that when you do walk away you don’t look back. The vultures have landed on the carcass already. Keep your head up high. There will be another opportunity.
Fighting for existence
In nature there are many species who really fight to survive but I don’t think anyone really understands the fight of the Rhino and Elephant. They carry “ wealth” that people envy and the animals are paying a terrible price to exist. Some cat species are already extinct and today we have only pictures of these magnificent cats. The cost of the losses can never be calculated.
Every business has to fight to survive at some stage. If you do not put rescue strategies in place then you might lose your business. The Rhino loses his horn but keeps his life. It is a helluva price to pay to survive. Take precautions - it is vital to stay relevant and stay ahead of the game.
Front stage
It is a known fact that people admire the Big 5. They will travel to exotic destinations and “pay” a petty penny to see them in their natural habitat. They want to admire them. Why? Because nothing is as magnificent as any of these animals.
Be magnificent dear Lionesses, be relevant. Go for the front stage. You need to be admired for your skill, your handy work, your passionate input, your achievements, but most of all for who you are. Go and be brave
