I love travelling. Looking for a new destination is a great hobby of mine. I have also learned that meticulous planning is crucial. Many people have a travel bucket list. Maybe you want to conquer the highest mountain or take a sabbatical, visit a bustling metropolitan or journey through the African bush and the great amazon!
These are great destinations right? So here is what we do wrong. We become fixated on the destination that we do not plan the journey to the T. Or, we are “ms plan”, focusing in detail on every stop and curve in the road, and missing the destination totally. We take our eye off the target.
In researching survival guides you would realize that to focus on both the destination and the journey is crucial to you being able to survive. People have lost the path to the destination because they did not plan the trip, or they took the “short cut’ path which was not a good idea at all. If you focus on the road in front of you but never look up to see if you can still see the “beacon”, you can end up walking in the wrong “planned” direction.
We have seen movies of people lost. The 1st thing they do is to search for a high place to see if they can find any civilization or help. Then they decide on the best route to get there. If you just start walking you will soon find yourself back at the same spot – even if you have planned to walk straight out of the situation.
So, what is it the point?
As business people we can focus on the destination, but we do not design the route and get lost in the unforeseen. Perhaps you have designed HOW to run your business but did not state a crystal clear destination.
We do exactly the same with our finances. For example. “I want to be wealthy”. This is a vague destination. “I want a successful business”. Also too vague!
“I want to be wealthy enough so that I can live my life to the fullest by earning a good passive income from my business and being a blessing to my community. For that to happen I need to meticulously plan my wealth journey and to constantly align and realign when necessary.”
Take some time today. Think about your real destination. Align your journey to this and do the same with your finances. A Certified Financial Planner is a starting point that can help with your journey. Your survival for your future will depend on your decisions today.
