Many successful businesses are inspired by a combination of passion and friendship. That is certainly the case with Kakawa Chocolates, a Mozambican company that is winning a passionate following of chocolate lovers in the country.
LoA found out more about this great company creating beautiful handcrafted chocolates made with love from one of its co-founders, Séfora Noor.
What does your company do?
At Kakawa Chocolates, we make chocolate bonbons with interesting local and foreign flavors.
"Being best friends since childhood and true chocolate lovers, the idea of forming a business that could celebrate these two characteristics was practically intuitive. And a new passion arose."
What inspired you to start your company?
We felt the need to do more beside our “conventional” jobs. Not a monetary need, but something that would use our creativity and entrepreneurial skills. However, as the time goes by, we can’t see ourselves doing anything else for the rest of our lives.
Why should anyone use your service or product?
Because our chocolates are delicious and proudly Mozambican.
"Four women dreamers with completely different personalities gave birth to a brand that expresses diversity, creativity, dedication and professionalism."
Tell us a little about your team
We are a group of four best friends who have known each other since childhood. We are very creative, driven and share a love of chocolate. Our company celebrates the love we have for each other, as much as the love we have for chocolate.
Share a little about your entrepreneurial journey. And, do you come from an entrepreneurial background?
Actually, we are a team of 3 doctors and 1 architect. We decided to go completely off the track in 2017, after we all had completed our college degrees. Individually, we had had some teenager business ventures, but nothing serious. So, we used our almost none existent knowledge of the business world and fueled ourselves with a sense of adventure to learn the basics of starting a company and making chocolate. The result has been amazing.
"With new entrepreneurial talent discovered, coupled with characteristically feminine detail, the possibilities have become limitless and goals become new goals as progress is revealed. The greatest reward is, of course, the sense of duty fulfilled."
What are your future plans and aspirations for your company?
We plan to open our first physical store soon. In a longer future, we want to expand our products to the rest of the country and to the world.
What gives you the most satisfaction being an entrepreneur?
At first, it’s like seeing something that was only a reality in your mind becoming alive. Then, it’s like having a baby and watching it grow.
What's the biggest piece of advice you can give to other women looking to start-up?
Everyone is still figuring it out. So our advice is to follow your instincts and take the risk.

Why LoA loves it….
It’s wonderful to see women entrepreneurs creating passion driven businesses, and for the four women founders of Kakawa Chocolates, that passion was driven by a long established friendship and a shared love of chocolate. Today, Sefora and her partners are creating a business and a brand that has the right foundation for success, as that inherent passion is what underpins everything, winning fans and customers along the way. --- Melanie Hawken, founder and ceo of Lionesses of Africa
