Founded in 2009, Beloved Beadwork is a company of twelve women passionately committed to the preservation and elaboration of the beadwork tradition. LoA caught up with founder and designer Anna Richerby at the Sanlam Handmade Contemporary Fair in Johannesburg to learn about this inspiring venture. Listen to our fascinating interview.
Anna describes Beloved Beadwork....
"At Beloved Beadwork we do as our name suggests, we make beloved items of personal adornment, using hours of loving labour and perfectly formed, tiny pieces of glass. We would love to tell you that our work is 'high fashion', or 'modern art', 'traditional craft', 'exclusive' or 'accessible', but the truth is it is all of those things and more. Beads are a wonderfully democratic medium, they appeal to people from every walk of life, and wearing them makes people feel beautiful at a deeper level. We love the look of pride on people's faces as they leave our shop wearing one of our pieces, and we smile knowing that all sorts of people will approach them to tell them that they look beautiful wearing it.
We are thirteen beadworkers in our company. Most of us work in the comfort of our homes, but you will always find Anna, Laurence and Francine at our studio and showroom at Montebello Design Centre in Newlands, Cape Town."
