Johannesburg Furniture Designer and Entrepreneur, Lizl Naude, has recently launched her new “Rubbish Range” of furniture made with discarded, waste material. Lizl Naude, owner of Lilly Loompa, a Johannesburg based Furniture Company, is a self taught Designer. She started designing and making furniture roughly six years ago, mostly because she couldn’t afford to buy new pieces to furnish her home. She started to scout and source for budget material and quickly realised that most people discard of very usable materials. This led to her building and designing beautiful furniture items that she used in her home.
Her “Rubbish Range” is a culmination of her resourcefulness and desire to produce pieces that are “green”. Where other see rubbish...she sees possibilities. Part of her new range, is a set of three lamps. All three have been made using recycled material. The “Tin Can Lamp”, has been made with 100% materials...from the tin can to the structure, to the screws. The “Pixar Lamp” was inspired by the lamp character from the Pixar logo. It is made using an unused library book end from a local primary school and was transformed using a lamp base which was also previously discarded. Just like the latter, the “Barely Hanging Lamp” was also made with an unused library book end. There is a lot of history attached to these two lamps and she purposefully tried to keep the chipping paint intact, as this speaks of the history of these wooden blocks.
"We centre on telling a story through each piece of furniture we design and craft. Our “Rubbish range” is made from discarded material and re-purposed into usable items. Thus most of our designs are unique and once-off items."
Lizl, who is originally from Paarl, is delighted with the results and the reaction she has received from the public. She is launching her very first on-line auction on 12 September 2016. The auction is a platform for clients and the public to view and bid for these exclusive items. They are invited to participate and place their bids by commenting on Lilly Loompa’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages. A minimum of R500 will be accepted as a legitimate bid.The auction will start at 08:00 from 12 September and will close promptly at 23:59 on 15 September. The highest bidders will be announced on Saturday, 17 September 2016. Lilly Loompa is a young and upcoming Design Company and produces furniture with a conscience. They produce tables, chairs, lighting, art and general furniture pieces.
"As natives of this wonderful country we feel the need to tell the stories of our fellow South Africans through a tactile and tangible way…through our furniture."
