Miminat, a London based Interior Architecture and Furniture Studio founded in 2014 by the uber talented Nigerian/UK design entrepreneur Mimi Shodeinde, is launching its new breath-taking collection OKUTA on 2 June. The Okuta Collection is inspired by ancient Yoruba stone murals, and explores the organic and natural forms of late 14th century Yoruba design. Its combination of wood, brass, glass, ceramic and gold leaf, embodies the richness that the African continent and Yoruba culture have to offer.
The Okuta Collection, with its raw, dark offcuts of stone and wood juxtaposed with the smooth texture of brass and glass, creates a poetic synergy where art meets design. The deliberate use of gold leaf refers back to a long history of a cultural affinity with using colour to enhance and transform palaces, shrines, cloths and art work. With every piece created to epitomise functional art, the Okuta collection offers a gateway to the secret world of ancient African story telling.

The collection was revealed through a soft launch on May 30th, showcasing 5 key pieces which are great for everyday use, special occasions or simply as gifts, with the rest of the collection set to launch in the Fall of 2018. These 5 functional art pieces range from cutting boards, tea sets, jugs and wine decanters, that are designed not only to bring a piece of luxury into your everyday life, but also embody Africa’s history of rich organic designs, colour and storytelling. With much of the collection sourced and handmade in Portugal, and the glass elements of our pieces hand blown in Czech Republic, Miminat’s dedication to pushing boundaries in design is illustrated through an investment in detail oriented and bespoke craftsmanship. In so doing, the Okuta collection brings together a fusion of modern European sensibilities imbued with classical African design. The Okuta Collection is available online at www.miminat.com, with prices starting from (£89.00).
