The need for skilled engineers in South Africa has never been greater, but getting access to the specialist training and skills development in a range of engineering disciplines can be challenging for many. The iCALC Training Academy, founded by Mylene Bosch, is about to change all that with the launch of its new virtual, digital online platform for trainee engineers.
The iCALC Training Academy in South Africa is a registered, private, and accredited TVET college. It offers educational turnkey engineering training for apprentices and artisans and those that want to become engineers. In order to provide greater access to specialist skills development opportunities, the Academy is launching a new virtual, digital online platform. It will integrate the theoretical engineering learning of the student into a practical, engaging, and applicable learning platform to engage the student with the practical applications of the trades within the engineering spectrum. This will be rolled out into the skills development arena to assist students to engage in a more applicative and practical manner. The Academy is re-modeling the very outdated engineering curriculum in order to give it a new, relevant, and current life, and establishing a campus that will offer an engineering student the full qualification, including work-integrated learning.
What makes the iCALC Training Academy different is that it is a first in the industry to fully integrate all pillars of the Nated engineering courses. It is also a pioneer with its creation of a virtual, digital platform that speaks directly to the NATED Engineering courses. It creates a practical environment for the student who is not able to access a workplace during learning to visualize that which he needs to. We offer small group learning which focuses on each individual, allowing each one to grow at their own pace.
The Academy is busy piloting its first version of the new online platform and is hoping, once the country has recovered from the current lockdown, COVID period to fully launch by November and looking to January to be able to start with the additional campus. Depending on what happens over the next few months will dictate what practically happens next, but the Academy team are currently in the planning phase.
The iCALC Training Academy also offers business studies, IT and is the next best thing to doing a degree. It addresses the scarce skills in the engineering sector and also offers short courses and skills development, tailor-making the course or skill to suit the client. Mylene and her team at the Academy believe in helping create entrepreneurs so that they can become sustainable and create local economic development. Also on offer from the Academy is a range of theory, practical, and work-integrated learning for engineering and business students. The aims is to change lives, create employment, and add value to the economy. Students can also access courses in the hospitality management arena, ICB (Bookkeeping) and ICDL.
Speaking about the launch of the new virtual, digital online platform for trainee engineers, founder Mylene Bosch says:
“Over the next 3 years, we would like to reach 1000 students per month and not 1000 students per year. We are also hoping to help more students realise their dreams and aspirations by offering alternative study options and methodologies. We want to be able to employ more people and create a learning institution that will accelerate the growth of both those that study here and work here. We build better, equipped and qualified people, one component at a time, through various learning methodologies - as we say - because You can @ iCALC.”
