Have you ever noticed how the best professional photographers make brilliant first impressions and connect with models and ordinary people like you and me to get that stunning photograph? Today, I’m sharing 3 nonverbal communication tips I learned from a professional photographer and author, Nicholas Boothman. You probably already know that nonverbal factors are often much more impactful than your word choices.
1. Make Eye Contact
"Eye contact is the key to establishing trust and rapport." When you meet someone new, try to maintain comfortable eye contact without staring. It shows that you are fully present and engaged in the conversation, setting a positive tone right from the start. If you struggle with eye contact, try to notice the color of the other person’s eyes.
Here’s an unconventional twist: In video meetings, look at the camera, not at the video of the person. It feels unnatural to you, but the other person feels much more connected because it feels like eye contact.
2. Use a Physical Prop in a Presentation
Using a physical prop is a game-changer in making a memorable impression. Whether it's a unique accessory, a notebook, or an interesting item related to your conversation, props serve as natural conversation starters.
Here are some props I or my clients have used:
boxing gloves (communication as a tool)
hard hat (great communication is hard)
portable vacuum cleaner (asking the audience not to be a sponge but a vacuum cleaner with all the content they’re learning)
scissors (time to be more concise)
little baby spoon (people can take in only so much information at a time)
3. Dress Well
If you like clothes, this tip is a ton of fun! As designer Miuccia Prada said, the act of wearing clothes itself becomes a means of direct communication.
The importance of appearance cannot be overstated. How you dress can significantly impact how others perceive you.
Choose outfits that make you feel comfortable, confident, and reflect the occasion to make a positive impact.
By mastering the power of eye contact, using physical props, and dressing with confidence, you can leave a lasting impression in any encounter.
