In today’s world where climate change, land restoration, and all environmental related topics are becoming increasingly urgent issues, it is upon us (Humans) to become more environmentally friendly. We can take actions individually or in associations. But I recently realized that as entrepreneurs we have the power to make a difference and contribute to a greener and more sustainable future.
I envision this new reality, after being dismissed from speaking at an event, because I never introduced my business as Green, but it is green! I used rejection as my fuel to understand more about green businesses, and what I could capitalize within my capabilities to also contribute to a better environment. This is what I found about my business and Green Businesses in general:
To be considered a Green Business, you need to match the following 4 criteria:
Incorporate Principles of Sustainability into each business decision.
Supply Environmentally friendly products or services that replace demand for non-green products or services.
Being Greener than traditional competition
Making an enduring commitment to environmental principles in your business operations.
MomlifeMarmitas checked the 4 criteria because we don’t only promote healthy diets, and educate parents about it, but we are also contributing to sustainability by using reusable packaging (lunchboxes & water bottles) instead of disposable packaging. This way we minimize plastic and paper waste, and we preserve the environment. We also represent brands that have adopted sustainable initiatives in their production value chain. Making and taking food from home means it’s another waste reduction strategy, since food portions are well managed and there is little to no excess food that goes to waste, not to mention that it's also cost effective. Finally, we are supporting local suppliers by sourcing ingredients locally to reduce carbon emissions from transportation. We also prefer in-season ingredients which are fresher, flavourful, and affordable, while we support local businesses.
So, my advice to you is: Look within your organizations and see what initiatives you can carry out. Here are a few ideas to get you started:
1. Reduce energy consumption: Switch to energy-efficient appliances, use natural lighting whenever possible, and turn off equipment when not in use.
2. Minimize waste: Implement recycling programs, use reusable products, and purchase supplies in bulk to reduce packaging waste.
3. Opt for sustainable materials: Look for eco-friendly alternatives to traditional materials, such as recycled paper or biodegradable packaging.
4. Educate your Teams: Encourage them to embrace green practices, such as carpooling or using reusable water bottles, and offer training on sustainability.
In conclusion, every entrepreneur has the power to make a difference and become a green business. By taking small steps towards sustainability, we can protect the planet for future generations, attract eco-conscious consumers, and contribute to a more sustainable future.
