Fear of public speaking is said to be more terrifying than death for many. I grew up as a very shy child, but once I entered the competitive word of work, I quickly realised that shyness was a luxury I couldn't afford. Especially as an entrepreneur, and particularly in the knowledge economy, stepping into the spotlight is non-negotiable. So how you can overcome your fear of visibility and showcase your expertise with confidence?
Entering the entrepreneurial world means stepping into a no-shy zone. Your business simply can't afford for you to stay hidden, particularly if you're in the knowledge economy. When you sell products, you can put them front and centre, but when you sell knowledge, you are the product!
Even if you're selling physical products, today's competitive global market demands your full commitment. As n entrepreneur, your job is to give your products and services the best possible chance of being bought, and that requires visibility on your part.
Visibility gives you a competitive advantage. People need to know, like, and trust you to buy from you. This is what I call the believability + visibility = credibility formula. Many times we focus on getting the qualifications and experience that make us believable, but without visibility no one will know what we have or what we re capable of, and we can miss incredible opportunities for both business growth and career progression.
Overcoming the Fear
Overcoming the fear of visibility is a multifaceted challenge that requires a deep understanding of the fears that hold us back. One of the most common fears is the fear of judgment. We worry about what others will think of us, and this can paralyse us into inaction. However, it's important to remember that people are judging us anyway, whether we step into the spotlight or not. Instead of letting this fear control us, we can choose to use it as fuel for our growth. By accepting that judgment is an inevitable part of being visible, we can focus on expressing our true selves and sharing our unique perspectives.
Another significant fear is the fear of failure. Since we know that no one achieves 100% success all the time, it's unrealistic to expect to make progress without failing here and there. Failure is a natural part of the journey and a stepping stone to success. Embracing the possibility of failure allows us to take risks and learn from our experiences. Each setback provides valuable lessons that contribute to our growth and resilience. By reframing failure as an opportunity for learning and improvement, we can move forward with greater confidence and determination.
Imposter syndrome is another common challenge that many entrepreneurs face - particularly women. We often doubt our own abilities and feel like frauds, despite our accomplishments and skills. It's important to reflect on our achievements and recognize that we have earned our place in our field. If by some chance we find that we are indeed imposters - that we are out four depth, then it’s important to up skill and get the knowledge and experience that will give us confidence. By acknowledging our expertise and valuing our contributions, we can overcome imposter syndrome and embrace our roles with confidence. Surrounding ourselves with supportive peers and mentors can also help us see our worth and reinforce our belief in ourselves.
Don’t Choose to Staying Hidden
If you don’t step forward and make your voice heard, someone else will grab that microphone and take your place on the stage, whether they are deserving of it or not. You’ll miss out on opportunities, let down those who support you, and ultimately, disappoint yourself. In the grand scheme of things, failing to step into your calling means failing to do your work in the world.
Of course bad things can happen, and they do from time to time. But that is no reason to keep your talents hidden or handicap your business. In the course of my career as a media personality, I have experienced on-stage wardrobe malfunctions, negative press, and even public falls . These moments pass, but the experience of stepping into your calling and helping others is irreplaceable.
Though I suffered embarrassment and even shame, I recognise that these experiences were essential to allowing me to play my part in telling better stories about women, Africa, and Africans, which is my life mission. You have to think about embracing fear as part of the journey, not as a sign that you shouldn't proceed.
