LIONESS WEEKENDER COVER STORY
The Hair Senta, a leading human hair processing and wig manufacturing business in Africa
Gwyneth Gyimah Addo, often called Gwen by many, is the ceo of one of the leading Human Hair processing/manufacturing companies in Africa, The Hair Senta, headquartered in Ghana and shipping across the globe. The business was started in 2012 and today employs 40 people. Gwen is also a wife, a mother, a philanthropist, and a business strategist.
LoA chatted to Gwen Addo this month to learn more about her entrepreneurial journey and her decision to build a business in the highly specialized field of human hair processing.
What does your company do?
We process human hair into multiple textures and designs aimed at matching hair textures and meeting individual preferences. The raw material i.e., hair extensions, are turned into wigs, hair accessories and other hair related products. The Hair Senta also hosts the biggest beauty international shows in Africa dubbed “HIBS Africa” which on-boards hair and beauty businesses within Africa, including European and American companies that intend to do business and expand their visibility.
What inspired you to start your company?
My lack made way for my gain. I had very little hair as a child that made me feel inferior and inadequate compared to my friends. I have loved her as a child and so it was natural for me to start my line of business.
Why should anyone use your service or product?
Integrity is important to me and it’s felt in how we do our business at The Hair Senta. Our products are consistent and we continue to innovate and our clients find us reliable. In 2020 and 2021, we supported many salon owned businesses through food, financial support and work tools as the industry was undergoing hard times due to the global pandemic. You can say we are a company with a heart.
Tell us a little about your team
My team is made up of sales executives who are the front liners engaging with clients online and in person within our various branches; then our creative department who work on our visuals and digital marketing; finally our Wigmakers who sit at the production end and churn out the wigs and related products for the market.
Share a little about your entrepreneurial journey. And do you come from an entrepreneurial background?
I do come from an entrepreneurial background. Mum was a trader and my dad was a business executive.
What are your future plans and aspirations for your company?
Aligning with our vision to be the biggest human hair company in the world with visible branches across the globe.
What gives you the most satisfaction being an entrepreneur?
I get to serve others and solve problems.
What's the biggest piece of advice you can give to other women looking to start-up?
It is important to have a long term vision. A short term vision will not enable you to sail successfully through the storms that come with entrepreneurship. Let your fears drive you to be resilient, not cripple you to quit.
