LoA had the opportunity to chat with Helen Andrews, the creative founder of White Rabbit Days, at the Sanlam Handmade Contemporary Fair in October. Her unique jewellery design company uses laser cutting techniques to craft astonishingly beautiful pieces from a range of materials from leather to brass. Listen to the interview here....
About White Rabbit Days....
“As a designer I am compelled to make things and it feels like the greatest achievement when, through those things, you’re able to connect with new people. Growing a network of stores that stock my products and building a professional life from scratch in this beautiful city are achievements I’m proud of and I am looking forward to taking White Rabbit Days to the next level.”
While studying visual communication at Stellenbosch, Helen had always magpie’d towards the jewellery studio, fascinated by the shiny, decorative elements and frustrated at not having full access to that world of metal and gems. The passion remains and, out of necessity, she created a way to make interesting pieces without any formal jewellery training.
Helen started making lace earrings as a sideline while freelancing as a graphic designer and found the shift from 2D design to making actual products immensely satisfying. With a limited supply of lace and a constant need for change, the range has grown to include laser-cut leather designs and a bold series of necklaces made from crocheted ribbons.
The hobby gradually turned into a business, growing slowly to ensure the right production processes, organically to respond to the market and sustainably to guarantee longevity. All the products are designed and made in Cape Town and as the business has grown Helen has been able to start training an apprentice.
